Set within the flatlands of La Saladita, Casa Neem is conceived as a serene countryside retreat just two kilometers from the ocean. Surrounded by grass fields and scattered vegetation, the house is defined by its relationship to the gardens that encircle it.
The layout separates private and communal life: bedrooms face west, ensuring privacy and quiet, while the common area opens generously to the north with wide windows that frame views and allow for natural ventilation. This orientation creates a peripheral garden around the entire house, transforming the landscape into its most essential element.
Built with bahareque a timber framework filled with earth and straw the structure achieves both resilience and thermal comfort. Clay tiles, parota carpentry, pine roofs, and handmade clay flooring pieces emphasize the project’s honest and organic materiality. Inside, vintage furniture reinforces the desired atmosphere of countryside familiarity and timelessness.
Completely off-grid, Casa Neem relies on solar panels for energy, a well for water, and an anaerobic digester for sewage. Every material except the concrete floor is biodegradable, ensuring a light footprint and an architecture that feels both grounded and regenerative.
PROJECT TYPE

DETAILS
The design of Casa Neem grew from experimentation and restraint:
- Exploring orientations to balance privacy with sun control and cooling.
- Developing a cost-effective design without compromising spatial quality.
- Pushing earth-building techniques toward clean, orthogonal forms.
- Emphasizing gardens and terraces as the true heart of the home.
- Designing for a fully off-grid lifestyle rooted in sustainability.
